Episcopal St. Luke's Cathedral, Orlando, Fla. "The City Beautiful"

Format

Color postcard

Date

c. 1940

Location

130 N Magnolia Ave, Orlando, FL 32801

Description

Episcopal St. Luke's Cathedral was founded by Frances W. Eppes, a nephew of Thomas Jefferson. Founded in 1892, the church began services while housed in a small, unassuming wooden structure, updated to the eye-catching cathedral pictured in the postcard above around the year 1926. It was at St. Luke's that the General Convention of the Episcopal Church established the Missionary Jurisdiction of South Florida. The Rev. William Crane Gray was elected for this position and consecrated the first bishop of this area, making his home in Orlando and declaring St. Luke's as the Cathedral Church for South Florida. Despite this announcement, the cathedral renovations halted during the financial depression of the 1920s and 1930s, only to be picked up again and finished to completion by the year 1987.
